How to earn a Merit Badge

For each merit badge experience as a youth, you will learn about new topics by completing the merit badge work and will find out that some of these topics become interesting to you as a result. Read the requirements for a Merit Badge before you sign up. Make sure you understand what is involved to complete the Merit Badge. Obtaining the Merit Badge Booklet and downloading the worksheet will help the scout better understand the Merit Badge.

There are three paths to earning a merit badge, and it is important that scout follow the following troop procedures for each process.

 

1)      Earning a Merit Badge with a Troop Counselor (individually or in a class)

2)      Earning a Merit Badge at a Troop 584 Summer Camp or SHAC Winter Camp

3)      Earning a Merit Badge with a Non Troop MB Counselor (including MB Fair or Class)

For Eagle Merit Badges, regardless of which route the scout chooses to earn a Merit Badge, he MUST FIRST review the list of Scoutmaster pre-approved Merit Badges by rank and age in the table below.  If the Scout desires an exception, he will have to talk with the Scoutmaster to get the exception approved.

 

In addition for all merit badges, the scout should also review the prerequisites and requirements for the Merit Badge on the following web site – www.meritbadge.org.  Scouts should read the requirements for a Merit Badge before you sign up to take the class.  Make sure you understand what will be required of you to complete the Merit Badge.  Obtain a Merit Badge booklet and download the worksheet which will also help the scout better understand the Merit Badge.
