For Parents: Youth Protection Training & Scoutbook

posted Sep 10, 2018, 3:49 PM by Robert Clausing   [ updated Sep 11, 2018, 2:09 PM ]

Re-posted from "Troop 584 Committee New for September 2018" email from the Troop Committee Chair...

Youth Protection Training

BSA updated its Youth Protection Training (YPT) program this Spring. All registered adults and merit badge counselors, even those who took the training last year, must take the new training by October 1, 2018. If you need help signing up for YPT at my.scouting.org, please reference the YPT attachment or on the Tutorials and How-to Documents page. If you don't know the login for the members area, please send email to scoutmaster@bsatroop584.com.

The annual membership renewal process begins in October. No adult can be renewed unless they’ve taken the new YPT course. Scouts and Scouters who do not renew on time will have to fill out a new scout application, so please renew through the recharter paperwork and save yourself and our volunteers the hassle of more paperwork.

The Troop has produced some documentation and video tutorials related to Scoutbook. If you are unfamiliar with Scoutbook, please reference the Scoutbook attachment or file(s) on the Tutorial and How-to Documents page. In short, the scout handbook is still where every rank requirements is signed off by the scoutmaster - from earning credit for a tenderfoot knot to his Eagle scoutmaster conference. Similarly, we still use the “blue card process” for merit badges. The Scoutbook web app is just how we transfer records from the troop to BSA. The attachment and video tutorials explain how the scout can take a picture of his handbook and upload through Scoutbook for the Advancement Coordinator to update. Once in Scoutbook, scouts and their families view the troops records that the troop has sent to the BSA which allows us to purchase the corresponding badges for our Courts of Honors.

For our troop, Scoutbook is missing too many features to replace the scout handbook. In the opinion of the Scoutmaster, Advancement Coordinator, and the Troop Committee, while Scoutbook is capable of replacing the Cub Scout handbook, it is far from capable of taking over the role of the Boy Scout Handbook. Our troop will continue to use the Boy Scout Handbook exclusively as the place for signoffs and we will update Scoutbook only after the data is entered in the Boy Scout Handbook. In the opinion of your chairman, trying to use both the Handbook for some requirements and the Scoutbook for other requirements, would be like Bill Murray said in Ghostbusters, "Mass Hysteria", so please continue to encourage your scout to bring his scout handbook to all scout meetings and campouts.

Note: Only a parent can signup a scout for a Scoutbook account. If you have not yet signed your son up, please check the instructions in the attachment.

Troop 584 Eagle #97 - Gunnar Elliott

posted Mar 8, 2018, 8:04 PM by Robert Clausing

Please join me in congratulating our newest Eagle, Gunnar Elliott (#97), our first one of 2018.  In picking the road less traveled he has proven that he can overcome the long odds of reaching this achievement.

Gunnar, you are now an Eagle by rank, but it's the man of Eagle character we are more proud of...well done!  We look forward to how you will soar giving back within our Troop...Eagle and up!

All Scouts please note, Eagle Scout is not simply a badge or rank, its something you earn.  Eagles are not given away...they are made, forged even.

Congratulate Gunnar in person the next time you see him or post a message on the Troop 584 Facebook group page.

Thank you.

Yours in Scouting,

Kevin Snow
Scoutmaster, BSA Troop 584

No Meeting 3/12/2018 During Spring Break

posted Mar 8, 2018, 7:58 PM by Robert Clausing

Just a quick reminder that there is no meeting on Monday, March 12th during spring break.  Spring break is a great time for patrol members who stay in town to get together and go do something fun like go bowling, see a movie or grab some ice cream.

If you haven't signed up for the March 23-25 campout to Pedernales Falls, go to the outings page and do that now.

And don't forget that Camporee is right around the corner on April 6 -8. You can sign up for that too on the outings page.

Special SCOUTS ONLY performance at Katy High School

posted Nov 7, 2017, 6:17 PM by Scout Webmaster

The talented cast and crew of KHS Theatre is hard at work preparing the musical “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown!”

The Directors and the booster club have decided to present a special “SCOUTS ONLY” performance of “Charlie Brown” on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 6pm, at a reduced ticket price of $8. On all other nights of the production (January 10-13), adult tickets are $15, and students are $12. Performances are held in the Performing Arts Center on the Katy High School campus.

On the “SCOUTS NIGHT” we welcome all Boy and Girl Scouts, Leaders, and their families to attend.

After the program, the Scouts will have the opportunity to enjoy a “meet and greet” with the cast and crew, and get autographs.
There are several current and former Scouts in the KHS Theatre company, and they will surprise the audience by wearing their sashes during the curtain call. The young Scouts will be very surprised to see which of the actors and technicians are real-life Scouts!

Would you be able to spread the word among the Boy Scouts community about this exclusive event? If you know of someone else I should contact, please let me know. I’ve attached the SCOUTS NIGHT flyer which includes the ticket code required for this special production. I can be reached with any questions.

I appreciate your attention, and hope you will attend this special performance of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown!”

Cyber Chip Contract

posted Apr 11, 2017, 7:33 AM by T.584 Technology Assistant

For the past two (2) weeks, the Troop has been working on the requirements for the Cyber Chip to make sure that all the Scouts in our Troop know how to and understand the importance of staying safe online and using digital devices in a responsible manner.

Scouts who attended the initial meeting on April 03, received a printed copy of the Cyber Chip contract. For those who who need a copy of the contract, you can download it here or use the attached PDF and print it out. All scouts need to do the following:
  1. Read the contract
  2. Sign the contract
  3. Share the contract with your parents and ask them to sign
  4. Bring your signed contract to the April 17 Troop meeting
Tip of the Week:
Don't wait until Monday evening to ask your parents to print out and sign this contract. Challenge yourself to get it done before Sunday night and then keep your signed contract with your Scout handbook so that you don't forget to bring it with you Monday night.
